Consumption

Water-Probably took the quickest shower of my life this morning but I’ll be honest it wan’t only in honor of Thirrsty Thursday(I had to make it to Tardy Detention). It was probably around 4 minutes. I went to the bathroom a couple times today, brushed my teeth,  and washed my hands three times. I had one Vitamin water today and a glass of water.

Food-Yogurt, Goldfish, Apple, Pizza, ToTs, Burgers, and Ziti

Gasoline-drove to the dentist which is Five minutes away

Money-Bought lunch for 2.50 and goldfish 50 cents

Reduction

In honor of Thirsty Thursday I focused on limiting my water usage. I reduced my shower time to a very minimal time for me. I also reduced the amount of water I drank by a decent amount

Sustainability- This might be hard for me sustain because that four minute shower was pretty fast and hectice for me but I think around six minutes could be a possible time for me. Also I’ll probably have to drink a little more water than I did today for me to maintain a healthy level of fitness and proper hydration.

Following- As I was creeping fierce I noticed everyone is doing “No Technology Thursday”; good for them but I already did that on Tuesday. I noticed a lot of people are cutting down on their Facebook and TV time.

Waterless Wednesday Day 4

Consumption:

Water- I drank a vitamin Water and a glass of water. I took a five minute shower and brushed my teeth twice, flushed the toilet, and washed my hands.

Food-I ate a yogurt, an apple, peanut butter crackers, goldfish, a sub from school lunch, steak, and mash potatos.

Electricity-I listened to music on my speakers and went on the computer for 2 hours

Gasoline-I did not drive anywhere

Reduction- Today I focused on decreasing my water usage and I cut down my shower time to five minutes which I feel is efficient. I also reduced the amount of water I drank.

Sustainability-I think it would be quite possible for me to keep my shower time to around 5 minutes but my water intake would probably have to be more than just a vitamin water and a glass of water everyday

Following- It seems as if the majority of students are doing about the same cutbacks as I am with their water intake. The shortest shower I saw however was four minutes.

No Technology Tuesday

1.  Consumption -

Water –I drank 2 glasses of water, a coffee, and a glass of milk. I didn’t do any laundry today and i took another eight minute shower. I brushed my teeth twice as usual and with the faucet off. I went to the bathroom four times and washed my hands five times i believe

Food– I did not have the energy this morning to make my own lunch so I bought school lunch today which was a slice of pizza and some gross fries. I had Steak and rice for dinner and ice cream for dessert. I also ate some chips and a yogurt throughout the day.

Electricity – I did not watch any TV after school today and only went on the computer to post this. I did however use my I home for a few hours today.

Gasoline – I took the bus to and from school

Money- I bought a coffee for $2.50 and lunch for $2.50

2. Reduction - My main objective for today was to cut down as much as I possibly could on my electricity usage. I think I did pretty well as I didn’t watch TV after school and I didn’t go on facebook which was a big challenge.

3.  Sustainability - I think I could easily continue to cut down on my computer usage especially all my wasted time on facebook. I think it would be a little harder to cut down on myTV usage because I like to watch ESPN all the time afterschool.  But besides that I don’t really watch too much TV. Cutting down on my electricity usage is more sustainable than trying to cut back on my spending.

Following-I observed again that my peers are still pretty focused on reducing their water usage so I think I’ll make that my main goal for tomorrow

It’s moving back to the sea” -Isaac Brock

No Monay$ Monday

Consumption:

WATER-I had around three glasses of water, a glass of O.J., and a coffee (homebrewed). I brushed my teeth twice( while the faucetwas off) and I took an eight minute shower before school. I also flushed the toilet three times and washed my hands 4 times.

Food-I did not eat anything for breakfast. I made a salami sandwich with chips and an apple for lunch. For dinner I had chicken and tater tots.

Electricity-I watched Monday night football. About an hour of computer usage.

Gasoline-I took the bus/train to school and back

Money-I reached my main goal for the day and didn’t spend any money today!

Reduction: The main objective of the day was to not spend any money and I successfully stuck to my goal. I also was concious to keep my computer usage and time spent in the shower to a minimum.

Sustainability Not spending money throughout an entire day is a lot harder than it looks. Not being able to buy a coffee on a Monday morning was a major sacrifice to me as attempting to make my own was not a sufficient replacement. It was also difficult not to buy snacks throughout the day and making my own lunch in the morning as opposed to usually buying it in school. Although I know not spending any money at all everyday is not a sustainable or at all possible goal i realized I can cut back on some of my everyday purchases.Although it is tough I know I can live without coffee…sometimes.

Following- After creeping a little bit I observed that a lot of my tumblr followers are focused more on reducing the amount of water they use; it appears as if the casestudy we are working on in class is having a major influence on a good amount of the students.

Day 1 of The First-Third Experiment

Consumption

WaterI consumed a few glasses of water along with a glass of Mountain Dew. I took an eight minute shower and shut off the water as I brushed my teeth twice today.

Food I ate a bagel and some bacon for breakfast, a steak and cheese sub for lunch, an orange and some chips as snacks throughout the day, and some pasta for dinner

Electricity I watched part of the Cowboys-Bills game and  I am about to watch the Jets-Pats game. My time on the computer was limited as I did not waste time on Facebook as I usually do on Sundays and was doing pretty good until I had to post on Tumblr…

Gasoline-I drove with my family to Scituate today-45 minute car ride

Money I did not spend any cash today

Reduction Well I tried to monitor my time in the shower and did not want to exceed ten minutes in order to save water. I also scaled back on my computer usage as I usually spend the most time on the computer on Sundays.  I reduced my soda drinking to one glass and ate an orange instead of Oreos. Not spending money was the hardest I didn’t even purchase my Sunday morning PS.

Sustainability I think I would be able to keep my Facebook time to a minimum as I actually kind of enjoyed the time away from all that nonsense and drama.

First To Third Experiment

7 Day Challenge 1st to 3rd

A social experiment, can we give up the unnecessary comforts of a 1st world lifestyle?

Non-negotiable Rules

1.  You are in no way to put your own safety (or safety of others), or general well being in any type of danger because of this experiment.

3.  You should not put yourself at risk academically (you must use whatever technology necessary for homework, computers, interweb etc…)

Lifestyle Changes

You should try and set attainable goals through this activity.  Imagine that you are a high school age student living in a 3rd world country.  What would this individuals average day look like?  What about an average week, or month?  How much different would it be than yours?

Could you eliminate the “comforts” of a 1st world lifestyle??  Could you live this lifestyle for one week???

Assignment

It is your task to chronicle your experience while participating in this activity and elaborate on how easy or difficult the changes were, whether or not you could even make the changes, and if this is something you could commit to for the long term.

You must chronicle your experience in either a blog (like this one) or through a series of video diaries.

Themes

While your efforts should be focused on reducing consumption and living a much “simpler” lifestyle for the entire weeklong period, each day will have a specific theme where you can focus your attention.

For Example:

Sunday -  Social Networking Sunday

Monday - $$$ Money Monday

Tuesday - Try Harder Tuesday

Wednesday - Waterless Wednesday

Thursday - Technology Thursday

Friday - Food Friday

Saturday - Spread the Word Saturday
